Ghost Town - Varosha

This place was not intended to be a tourist attraction. It is a yesteryear booming resort area in the district of Famagusta, in the northern part of Cyprus,

which was vacated by its inhabitants when the Turkish invasion of the island, in 1974, compelled Greek Cypriots to suddenly flee their homes, never to return. Varosha has remained fenced off eversince and, over time, the houses, hotels and commercial centres have deteriorated as nature slowly takes over. It is real eye-opener of what happened 40 years ago: the visitor is overshadowed by the evidence of war. Signs warn tourists peering over the fence that photos and movies are forbidden. Exiled residents regularly pin love letters and flowers to the barbed wire.
