Saranta Kolones

Visitors might be interested in exploring the dungeons and towers of a ruined medieval fortress lying to the north of Paphos Harbour.

Destroyed by an earthquake in 1222 and subsequently abandoned, this castle was probably constructed at the end of the 7th century AD to protect the harbour and city of Paphos from Saracen raids. The original construction was built on a large number of granite columns, hence its current name “sarantes kolones” (forty columns).
